This week in reading, we will wrap up our unit on Changes in LEAD21. The final week's focus question is "How do we change as we grow?" We will review the vocabulary from the unit. We will continue practicing our new comprehension skill of inferring as we read a fiction piece in our Theme Readers called Scaredy Squirrel. We will also continue working on subjects and predicates this week, as well as inflected endings and prefixes meaning "not." In our exploration of the Inquiry process, we will settle on a question this week, and we will begin to discuss conjectures. We begin a new spelling unit this week, and we will be practicing long e words, so be on the lookout for a new spelling list for your child's homework folder.
In writing, we will finish revising and also edit our first writing piece. Can your child tell you the difference between revising and editing? We may also have the time to begin publishing this work, perhaps even using our new Google apps to do so (if your child's permission slip was signed and returned).
In math, we will move on from addition into subtraction of numbers within 1,000. We will begin with estimating differences, and then we will learn some mental math strategies for subtracting numbers that include the use of a number line as well as breaking apart a number into place values. Any practice your child can get at home with addition and subtraction using mental math strategies, not regrouping, will benefit them greatly. Feel free to contact me for ideas on how to practice with your child, but they can always access our MobyMax math practice program from home at mobymax.com.
It's not too late for pumpkins! We began our painting project last Friday, but came nowhere near close to finishing, so if your child would still like to bring in a pumpkin to create a globe out of, send them on in! We could also use some more snacks, if you could spare a box or two.
PICTURE DAY is this Friday. Order forms went home in last Friday's folders, so please remember to send those back in if you would like to purchase. Your child will have their photo taken, regardless, for yearbook and office filing purposes.
Have a great week!
