This week in reading, we will be working on Week 3 in our Changes unit for LEAD21. The focus question for the week is "What changes can we choose to make?" and new vocabulary for the week is prepare and familiar. We will finish up the nonfiction piece called Growing and Changing in our Theme Readers. The comprehension skill for this week is making inferences, and we will also be reviewing prefixes meaning "not." In grammar, we will finish up the 4 types of sentences, and then we will learn about complete subject and predicates, the two basic parts of a sentence. We are still working on honing in on the perfect Inquiry question this week as well.
In writing, we will be learning the difference between revising and editing a piece of work. In spelling, we will continue to hunt for our own words that we could add into our long a words, and we will end this spelling skill this week with a posttest on Friday.
For math, we are going to learn three different ways to estimate sums, and then we will begin working on mental math strategies to add. Be on the lookout for login information to be able to access the math curriculum online.
We will continue learning about the parts of the world in social studies this week, starting with hemispheres and working all the way in to our city/community. Then, as you may have seen in a note I sent home last week, we will take this information and apply it to our own homemade globes, which we will be creating out of pumpkins. Like I said in the note, we would love donations, if you are willing and able, either of a pumpkin, not larger than 6-8 inches, or a monetary donation that we will use to purchase the pumpkins. If you would like to donate, please have this in no later than Wednesday.
Congratulations to us! Because of our spectacular attendance so far (96%!), our class won an aquarium setup at last week's attendance assembly! I hope to get this set up and our winning fish in it this week. I just want to thank each and every one of you for supporting the fact that attendance matters, and making sure your child comes to school on time each day. It is so very important to their learning development, and I thank you for your continued support at home.
Have a great week!
