This week in reading, we will dive into Unit 3, which is called The Shape of the Land. The new unit-long theme question will be "How does geography shape a community?" and the Week 1 focus is "How can we describe a community by its geography?" Vocabulary for this week is geography, community, and business. Our comprehension focus will be on asking and answering questions as we read, and we will also be learning about noun suffixes, as well as action and linking verbs. We will meet our new groups for another Inquiry project and settle on a new question to explore this week.
In math, we will finish up learning all of the "cheats" for each factor up to 10 in multiplication, as well as review all of the properties of multiplication that have made each factor easier for us. Can your child sum up the Commutative, Associative, Distributive, Identity, and Zero Properties of Multiplication for you? We will then spend some time reviewing problem-solving skills before taking the Chapter 4 Test. Then, we will focus on graphing, as always, on Friday.
We wrap up our Million Dollar essays this week, and if we have time we will begin learning the difference between Expository and Narrative writing after that.
This Thursday is our Science Night here at Newman, so come on by at 6:00 to participate in a little friendly structure-building competition with the family. Prizes will be awarded to winning structures. Please remember that students attending must have an adult accompanying. Thank you!!
Have a great week!
