This week in reading, we move on to Week 2 in our Changes unit. The focus question for the week is "What do we do when things change?" and new vocabulary for the week will be decision and skill, as we review the words from last week, choose, responsibility, and confused. We will continue to work on picking out the important ideas versus the supporting details while we read, and we will be studying the inflected endings of -s and -es (we add these to a verb to make it its singular version). In grammar this week, we will review the 4 types of sentences from last week (can your child tell you the difference between a declarative and an imperative sentence?), and we will also begin to learn the basic parts of a sentence - the complete subject and the complete predicate. During Inquiry, we will decide on our first project question and begin to make a conjecture as to its answer. We will continue working on long a words in spelling.
We are still working on the Writing Process, though we did not get nearly as far as I hoped we would last week. Hopefully your child can tell you all about the Drafting stage, and after this week, they should be pretty expert at Drafting as well.
In math this week, we will continue to work on the rounding we began last week, and we will continue to sort through those addition properties (the Commutative, or Order, Property; the Associative, or Grouping, Property; and the Identity, or Zero, Property). These properties will help us as we move into the next lessons of estimating sums and using mental math strategies to add.
Please remember that this Thursday, the 24th, will be an Early Out day. Dismissal will be at noon, and sack lunches will be available upon request (please have those half-sheets returned by Tuesday). Busses will be running that afternoon, but if you normally pick up your child, please remember dismissal at 12:00 this day.
Have a great week!
