We get to begin a new unit in LEAD21 this week called Science All Around Us. The theme question for the entire unit is "How does science help us have fun?" and the Week 1 focus question is "What role does science play in sports?" Vocabulary for this week will be energy, force, and technology. The comprehension skill is summarizing, and we will also begin studying contractions with am, is, & are. In grammar, we will finish up exploring singular and plural nouns from last week, and then we will learn about the use of articles (the, a, & an) to modify common and proper nouns. We picked two Inquiry questions last week: "What is the science behind roller coasters?" and "What is the science behind 3D glasses and movies?" So this week, the students will begin researching to find information to prove their conjectures.
We get to finish publishing our first piece of writing this week; it took a bit longer than expected last week to get our D2 apps set up in a way that their work can easily be shared with me. But now, those who have permission to use their D2 accounts will type their first piece of writing, which is the final stage in the Writing Process, publishing.
In math, we will move on to Chapter 3, which introduces the concepts behind multiplication. We will learn about multiplication as equal groups, using repeated addition to solve multiplication problems, an well as skip counting on a number line. Each Friday for the next few weeks, we will take a step back from the multiplication concepts we are learning and begin exploring Chapter 2, which teaches us about interpreting data as well as using data to create tables and graphs.
We are lucky enough to be participating in an event sponsored by United Way (the same group that awarded us our fish because Attendance Matters) called Read Across the Globe This means that on Monday, we will have a special guest reader in our room to read aloud to us.
Have a great week!
